What is a 'service'?

Services perform tasks in the background. Windows has scores of services running all the time. Most are necessary, some are optional. For more information on Windows Services, see www.blackviper.com

What is this Indexing Service?

The Indexing Service builds an index of your files (Documents, text files, etc.), in order to find them faster IF your search for them. But if you do not frequently search for files on your computer (most people do not), you may be losing more than you gain!
Stopping the indexing services can speed up your computer system.

Windows XP

Click: Start -> RUN and type: services.msc and hit: return
scroll down to Indexing Service, double-click, stop it, and set to disabled.

Windows Vista and Windows 7

Click: Start and type: services.msc and hit: return
scroll down to Windows Search, double-click, stop it, and set to disabled.
