Error 3194 When Restoring Stock

2:11:00 AM | , , ,

Users often reports error 3194 when restoring either stock, or custom firmware / iOS. These are the steps to fix error 3194 when restoring custom / stock firmware on iPhone / iPad / iPad.

iTunes error 3194 usually appears when you’re trying to restore an unsignedfirmware, often during an iOS downgrade or even during some restores. If you run into Error 3194 from iTunes, you can temporarily fix 3194 error by pointing iTunes to Cydia’s SHSH server where you’ve SHSH blobs saved for that particular firmwares.
Occurs when trying to install an old firmware and Apple’s server disallows the installation. The only solution is to have SHSH backup and modify the hosts file to point to Saurik’s Cydia Server where they are backed up (or localhost if you have it yourself).

How to Fix iTunes Error 3194
You can fix iTunes error 3194 by adding Cydia’s SHSH Caching Server to the hosts file. You can do this either by using TinyUmbrella or you can also manually edit the hosts file. We’re going to explain both methods.

Fix ITunes Error 3194 [TinyUmbrella]
To add Cydia’s SHSH Caching Server to the Hosts file:
  • Launch TinyUmbrella, go to the “Advanced” tab and check “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit”;
  • Click on “Apply Changes” and then reboot your PC/Mac.
  • Put your iDevice into DFU Mode and Try restoring it via iTunes.
Fix ITunes Error 3194 [Manually]
Close iTunes.
Locate the Hots file:

Windows:
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and locate hosts file.
Open and edit the hosts file in Notepad.
Note: Win 7 and Vista users MUST run Notepad with admin privileges. Right click on Notepad app and select Run as Administrator.

Mac OS X:
  • Go to \etc\ directory and locate hosts file. Copy it on your desktop
  • Open the hosts file in TextEdit.
  • Add the following lines to the very bottom of the hosts file:
  • 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
  • remove any other line that contains gs.apple.com
  • Put your iDevice into DFU Mode and Try restoring it via iTunes.
That’s it! You should now be able to successfully restore the desired older firmware (if SHSH saved).
*** If you’re getting iTunes error 3194 with the latest firmware (Signed iOS) then simply remove the Cydia’s SHSH server IP, if it’s already in the Hosts file. It’s the reverse of the process explained below.
“The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194).”

5 tips for improving your iPhone battery life

1:05:00 AM |

5 tips for improving your iPhone battery lifeThere is nothing worse than running out of battery life on your iPhone, the feeling of disconnection when your communications lifeline is suddenly no more. If you are like me, your connection to the outside world stops almost completely. Not only can you no longer make phone calls, but your access to emailFacebookTwitter, and even the weather forecast is no more. So what can you do to reduce the likelihood of running out of battery power when you know the next charge is a long way off or if you are a heavy-duty user? Luckily, we can help.

jc 300 iphone wifi screenshot flickr dana robinsonBanish bluetooth
Bluetooth is the first of the iPhone's power-hungry features. Unless you need to use the technology to access a bluetooth headset, connect to your car, or use a specific app that requires it, odds are you don't need it turned on. To switch it off, tap Settings, General, Bluetooth, and then change Bluetooth On to Bluetooth Off.

Say bye-bye to wifi
Like bluetooth, wifi can chew up a lot of battery very quickly. If you don't use it, switch it off!

Wifi is what connects you to the internet using a wireless hotspot such as the ones you would find in McDonald'scoffee shops, or hotels. Your iPhone almost constantly scans for these hotspots, which only uses a little bit of power each time — but it adds up quickly!

Think twice before turning off this feature, though. If you have a limited data allowance on your phone plan, not using wireless hotspots will use up a lot of cellular data. If you're not bothered or don't want internet connectivity via wifi, switching the function off will save you lots of battery life.

To switch off wifi, click on Settings, Wifi and change Wifi On to Wifi Off.

jc 300 iphone close processesPut background processes behind you
You may not realize it, but your iPhone will keep running many of the programs you have opened in the background, for easy access later. These programs can still use a substantial amount of processor time even when you're not using them, drastically reducing your battery life. One app can chew up more than 15-20% of battery life in one hour; you will find you phone goes flat very quickly if this happens.

So how do you stop these processes? The easy way, of course, is to restart your phone by holding the top button and then sliding to power off. However, if you don't want to restart your phone, there's another option. Go to your home screen by clicking the button under the screen. Once on the home screen, click the button twice quickly; a line of icons will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold one of those icons for five seconds, and the whole lot will start shaking. Then simply click on the red circle with the horizontal line on each app that you want to close.

(Confused? Let Tecca just show you how to close these apps!)

jc 300 iphone notification screenshot flickr ritcheyerThe future might be less bright
One very simple (and often overlooked) change that will make your battery last longer is to lower your screen brightness. This is a small but effective tweak — remember, the brighter you keep your screen, the more power it will use. Click on Settings, followed by Brightness, then slide the bar to the left.

Put notifications on notice
Call notifications are an awesome feature of the iPhone. These are the pop-ups that show up on the screen when it's locked, letting you know the weather forecast, the latest posts in your Twitter feed, or simply when your favorite app has been updated. However (you guessed it), these features also chew through battery power.

To disable notifications, click on Settings, then Notifications, then move the Notifications slider to off.

Grin and bear it
It's a fact of life: The charge on your iPhone battery simply won't last forever. But with these small tweaks, you can squeeze the most out of your charge — and if that's not enough, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for convenient power outlets.

iPad Battery Life?: iPad Battery Care Tips

1:40:00 AM |

Tips to Extend iPad Battery Life

Your iPad comes with a number of settings that you can use. Play with your  iPad settings to optimize to your needs and save energy by consuming less power.

Don’t Fry or Freeze Your iPad

Summer is here and you may be on the move often. Once you get used to iPad, it is natural that you may feel handicapped without iPad and take your iPad wherever you go. This brings the risk of keeping your iPad in the sun or leave it in your car. iPad does not like it when the temperature is not within 32F to 95F. Anything above/below may affect the iPad and its battery life. Therefore, always try to keep your iPad around room temperature (72F).

Switch Off Wi-Fi

If you’re not using Wi-Fi,  switch it off to save power.  You can easily switch off by going to “Settings -> Wi-Fi” and set Wi-Fi to Off.

Run Down The Battery Once A Month

Use the iPad regularly and completely drain the battery at least once a month. This will help extend the battery life.

Avoid Over Heating the iPad While Charging

iPad may become hot while charging the iPad with a case and it may affect battery life. Therefore, It is always better to charge the iPad with no protection gears like iPad case.

Switch Off 3G (Only for iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G model)

If you’re not using 3G connectivity,  switch it off.  You can easily switch off 3G by going to “Settings -> Cellular” and set Cellular Data to Off.

Use Wi-Fi If You have Both 3G and Wi-Fi Connectivity

iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G  users should use Wi-Fi instead 3G conectivity if possible. Wi-Fi consumes less power compared to 3G and Wi-Fi is probably faster.

Adjust the Screen Brightness

Minimizing the screen brightness is one of the easiest ways to save power and battery life. Go to “Settings -> Brightness & Wallpaper” and drag and adjust brightness.

Minimize Use of Location Services

A number of applications like Maps use location services to update the current location and they consume power. Therefore minimize the use of  location services only when you really want it. You can easily disable location services by going to  ”Settings -> General -> Location Services”.
Apple iPad Wi-Fi and 3G models are available for sale in US. Both the iPad models have a phenomenal battery life (at least 9 hours). Literally one can forget about charging. In addition, if iPad battery malfunctions and could not hold 50% of charge, Apple will replace your iPad itself for $99.  Very good battery life and the Apple’s battery replacement plan could make us take iPad battery for granted and not take care of iPad battery. Here are some simple tips to take care of iPad and extend battery life/life-span.

Fetch Your Mails Less Frequently

Mail programs check for new messages at a certain intervals and fetch them. Frequent checking from one or more of your mail accounts will drain your battery. Changing your fetch option to manual mode will save power. Go to “Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Fetch New Data” and tap Manually. Or you can also increase the fetch interval (make it less frequent), by going to “Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Fetch New Data” and tap Hourly.

Don’t Ignore Software Updates

Software updates may  help improve the battery life.  Make sure your iPad is updated with latest versions of the software you are using.

Apple iPad 2 Vs Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet: Take Smart Decision

11:25:00 PM |

The Amazon Kindle Fire is now up for grabs. Of course, it is quite undeniable that the tablet successfully reaped the attention of the many due to its very affordable price. But if you are the type of person who would seek for reviews and comparisons before you make your final decision, then you might as well read on.
In this particular post, we will be comparing the Amazon Kindle Fire against the Apple iPad 2, one of the most sought tablets of this year. Thus, without further ado, allow us to share to you the advantages and disadvantages of each tablet according to a variety of factors.
DISPLAY SIZE
First off is the appearance. It is quite apparent that the Kindle Fire is much smaller than the iPad 2. The Amazon tablet can provide you with a 7 inch multi-touch IPS display at 1024 x 600 pixels (169 ppi) of screen resolution. Meanwhile, the iPad 2 can take pride of its large 9.7 inch diagonal LED-backlit glossy display at 1024 x 768 pixels (132 ppi) of screen resolution. The Kindle Fire weighs around 413 grams while the iPad 2 weighs around 601 grams. If we speak of portability, then it is pretty obvious that the former wins over the latter. Though, it can’t also be denied that the iPad 2 is way much thinner than the Kindle Fire.
iPad 2 Vs Kindle Fire
SPECS & FEATURES
Upon comparing these two tablets, there are two basic aspects that you need to keep in mind. The first one is the connectivity and the second one is the platform. You should also consider the fact that you would need a reliable device that could sync with your PC, notebook or smartphone. In that case, both devices can provide you with their high-speed Wi-Fi b/g/n connection. The iPad 2, on the other hand, gets the lead because it offers a built-in support for 3G. But if you’re not a heavy 3G user and you prefer not to commit to any monthly data plans, then you can pretty much depend on the Kindle Fire.
In addition, the Kindle Fire can somehow compete with the iPad 2 when it comes to standard web browsing. Still, the Amazon tablet can’t beat the iPad 2 when it comes to the speed of page loading but you can always depend on the Fire’s cloud-accelerated Amazon Silk browser with Adobe Flash support.
You should also take note that the Kindle Fire is being powered by Android and you can definitely take advantage of its wide selection of Android applications. But that’s not all. You will also be able to enjoy the slate’s massive stock of books, movies and songs. The only downside of this slate is that you will have to download these apps via the Amazon App Store. If you want to access the Android Market, then you would probably need to sideload. Meanwhile, the iPad 2 can let you browse through its vast range of built-in applications.
BATTERY
In terms of battery life, the Kindle Fire’s battery can last up to eight hours while the iPad 2’s power cell can let you stay on for 10 hours. There is a bit of a difference but you should also consider the activities that you do that causes your battery to deplete sooner than you have expected.
CAMERA
Unlike the iPad 2, the Kindle Fire doesn’t provide any camera. You won’t be able to take a bunch of snap shots and you will basically be deprived of the joy of video calls. You may chat with your friends on Skype or Facebook but that would be as far as you can go.
PERFORMANCE
Both slates are based on a Dual Core ARM Processor. But even so, the iPad 2’s A5 Chip offers a better performance than the OMAP 4 chip inside the Kindle Fire. You can pretty much notice that the Apple slate boots much faster than that new tablet from Amazon.
PRICE
Let us admit that the Kindle Fire is a budget-friendly tablet that can be easily acquired by anyone who wants a tablet. Its 8GB of storage is quite enough for any typical tablet user. Compared to the 16GB Wi-Fi only model of the iPad 2, the Kindle Fire can definitely give you a decent option. It’s only $199 while the iPad 2 would require you to pay the sum of $499.
As a wrap-up, we can’t really say that you should get the Kindle Fire because it is cheaper. It truly depends upon your needs. If you don’t do much other than surfing the web or watching your favourite flicks via Netfix and you don’t want to spend a lot for a tablet, then you can definitely save a lot if you opt for the Kindle Fire. But if you want to enjoy a heap of features and you are willing to spend your savings on a much deserving device, better get the iPad 2. You really don’t need to think twice.
